Preparation of Soil

To make sure that the soil, one is using for vegetable plants will have a positive impact on the plants, it is important to keep in mind a few things.

Organic Material

Most commercial soil doesn’t use organic material, when they are creating the soil. Organic material should be present in the soil, because it helps the vegetables grow into healthy plants. Organic materials provide plants with the nutrients that they need to thrive. Further, when organic materials are present in a soil, then they soften it, making it easier for the roots to spread. NPK In The Soil

It is very important for the soil to have nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. These are the basic nutrients that plants need to grow and thrive. Organic materials don’t necessarily provide these nutrients, which is why they have to be adjusted individually. For adding nitrogen in the soil, the gardener should use chemical fertilizer that has a high first number like 10. For adding phosphorus, the second number of the chemical fertilizer should be high as well, like 10. In case of potassium, the number can be the same; however, in each case, the number has to amount to 14, so it has to be balanced.

Types of Soil

In case there is a problem with the drainage system of soil, it is best to practice double digging. In this practice, the gardener removes the row of the soil, 1 foot deep, and saves the excavated soil using a tarp. Then, the subsoil is loosened, and trenched with a spading fork. This step should be repeated until the gardener reached the end of the bed, and then uses the reserved soil to fill the trenches.
